At the beginning of each month, I’d like to post a trend or style that I see occurring around the Internet, on Instagram, or in HK. Lately I’ve been seeing a new take on the basic oversized button down shirt: the wrap and tuck. Tucks these days have gone in all sorts of directions: the French tuck, the half tuck, no tuck, or even the tie of the shirt–which I realize is not even a tuck. (Take a look at all my versions of all the tucks from this post back on an April Fools in 2016. Guess which one I do not embrace!) When I started seeing the wrap and tuck, I got a little excited because wrap shirts (and wrap dresses for that matter) work really well for busty figures.
It’s quite simple to achieve this wrap and tuck look. First of all, I recommend some high waisted underwear. I could have taken the button hole side, but I preferred the button side tucked first. I wrapped this side as far as I could across my front section. I then tucked that side of the shirt into my underwear–so much so that I was able to pull the side of the shirt all the way through the leg of my panties. Then, I did the same exact thing to the other side. At this point I pulled up my highwaisted jeans and tucked the back of the shirt into the jeans. Presto. Done. Wrap and tuck achieved.
Every now and then I had to take the outer tuck and smoosh it into my jeans, yet I will say the shirt stays pretty put. There are two necessary tips for making this wrap and tuck work. First wearing high waisted pants, shorts, or skirt is a must. This allows the tuck to stay in better. I can envision trying out this wrap and tuck with all sorts of dress shirts in my closet–although, the second tip has to do with size. The button down must be oversized for this to work. A fitted button down probably would not work, at least not on curvy figures.
Let me give credit where credit is due: Audrey Hepburn, the OG to wear the wrap and tuck! Audrey’s effortless yet completely classical style is one to refer to forever and ever.
Also, this Popsugar article has tons of samples of the wrap and tuck trend as does this Miss Malini post.
And if my directions were not helpful, here’s a video from Refinery 29. The difference here is this gal buttoned the top of the wrap (which ended up not working for me as I need to be able to pull over as far as I could).
