Wearing Holiday Red Plaid with Sneakers

The Mini Red Plaid Skirt

On Friday I asked all of you, my Dear Readers, if I should continue with my Wednesday Wearing series, and the answer was yes! Yahoo!! This makes me happy because I have really been enjoying styling a theme each month offering different variations on how to where something that’s trending or inspiring me. For December I offered plaid or sequins, but really both of those two themes are too hard to choose from. So, I’ve decided to do something else–with both of course. I consider myself a master sneaker wearer; therefore I plan to demonstrate how to style for the holidays with sneakers. I’m going to prove it can be done!

Before I continue, I have something important to admit. I have an entire box full of clothing dedicated to the holidays. Yes, it’s true. In the that box, there are even holiday accessories–like Santa earrings and a Santa with his reindeer necklace. It’s safe to say I love dressing up as if I am actually one of Santa’s elves. And yes, you don’t even need to ask. I wholeheartedly believe in Santa. I can remember when my parents sat me down in the living room (reserved for only serious conversations) in the 6th grade. They tried to tell me who Santa was, but I still don’t believe them. Sure, Santa needs help, but his magic is very, very real.

Each year I stumble upon sales and add to my Christmas wardrobe box. This year, I scored this red plaid mini for $100 HKD (that’s about $12 USD) at H&M. Coincidentally I also nabbed this “FANTASTIQUE” red wonder from the mens’ department at H&M for $79 HKD (that’s only $10 bucks!). I was extremely happy to find this skirt, because my old red plaid holiday skirt was well worn. It needed replacing in a very bad way.

Last year for Christmas we spent the holiday with my sister’s family in Thailand. I can remember when I found this precious necklace at the Asiatique Night Market in Bangkok. Christmas was long over, but it didn’t matter. I knew this would be a present I’d want to pull out in the following years. I haven’t taken it off since I put it on this Monday, and it’s now Wednesday. I’ll be wearing it for a while…. It’s so cute!

This is a monochromatic look, and that’s why the sneakers work–along with the casualness of a sweatshirt. I wore this to school on Monday to get the gift giving going in the high school library where I work. For 8 days, there will be 24 gifts given away to the kids. I love bringing my joy of the holidays to them, and it’s fair to say that they really like it too. These kiddos work so hard; any chance for a little fun, and I’m going to make it happen.

The Long Red Plaid Skirt

This Wednesday I’m showing two ways of wearing sneakers with a holiday red skirt. It just so happens that I wore this to school today, so I thought, Hey, why not? I set up my tripod in front of one of the library’s Christmas trees (we have two!), and let Remota (my remote control) take some pics. (Now, I cannot promise every Wednesday will feature two looks featuring sneakers with holiday ware, but today is a lucky day!)

The great thing about this skirt is its length. No one can really tell that I have sneakers on anyway. The black peaking out at the end of the skirt could be heels–maybe? But believe me; they are not. I’m wearing my black Nike Huraches (inspired by Aimee Song). I have yet to figure out how to style these shoes, so the fact that they’re hidden is a plus. They are super comfortable, but in terms of how they look, I’m not as happy with them as I had hoped to be. So hidden here is a good thing. Thumbs up!

Each year my team and I decorate the library–for all sorts of festivals and celebrations. When it comes to Christmas we switch it up each year. Our themes change, so it’s always different for the kiddos. We also add some sort of gift giving game which gets everyone all excited. This year’s theme is polar bears, so it’s all white with accents of black and white. When the kids win a gift they have to go over to the Polar Bear Yoga station and complete a pose in order to receive their gift. Yep, these teenagers need a little fun once in a while amongst their busy school day.

There’s the Santa and reindeer necklace again. I’m so enjoying wearing it. It’s as if I’m an official elf.

There it is–two different holiday outfits in red plaid with sneakers. I felt totally festive in each outfit. Red plaid is the best. Basically I can’t say no to this print.

PS Check out this long plaid dress from years before here and here.

Which outfit do you like better? But more importantly…

Would you consider wearing sneakers for the holidays?

Let’s see what I come up with for next week….
