Update from Don’t Tell Me What to Wear

Back in September, I wrote a post about a school uniformed. My plea was “Please don’t tell me what to wear!” My high school gave us these really ugly polos to wear on Fridays. Granted they’ve been repurposed from recycled fabric, so there’s a good purpose behind the actual shirt, but it’s Godawful ugly! I’ve worn mine once, and felt so uncomfortable all day long. I didn’t feel like myself and was itching to change my clothes. Since that day, I’ve dressed every Friday in school spirt–just not in the offensive polo. Here’s a sampling of how I’ve supported my employer while honoring my personal style:

Don't Tell Me What to Wear

As a baseball player mom, nicknamed Mommager, I have a couple of baseball tees. When I get a tee, I even tailor it with a pair of scissors to meet my needs. Here I cut off the collar, sleeves and even the hem. I paired the tee with my Adidas fanny pack and my red high tops. And jeans are totally acceptable on these days, so of course I went with my Levi’s. This is such a me outfit: I felt comfortable, cute, and spirited cheering on my son’s team with this ootd.

Don't Tell Me What to Wear

This is a very matchy matchy outfit in our school colors. It’s a little OTT (over the top), but hey that’s me! I like the addition of my heart socks. I really do love where I work! I feel that I have the very best job in the school as the high school librarian.

Don't Tell Me What to Wear

Here’s a sampling of how I seriously do my own thing: taking an oversized, striped shirt and turning it into a skirt. (Here’s directions how to do this.) The special part of this outfit is the sweatshirt. Our tech coach had this made for me since I support the SDLT (Student Digital Leadership Team)–the best part is the back. I am the Dear Librarian!

And another DIY look was worn here. We have a lost and found that can be a treasure trove at times. I’d seen this sweatshirt sitting in there for a while, so I finally adopted it. Since I already have the long sleeve version, I cut off the sleeves and hem of this one. I swear; I did let it sit there for a while. What’s that saying? Finders keepers, losers weepers!

All Thanksgiving weekend we’ve been supporting Gigi and her varsity basketball team. (Yep! She’s a 9th grader and made the A-Team.) In anticipation of this tournament I needed a different tee besides my baseball ones. I grabbed a “FEAR THE DRAGON” in two of the sizes they had left: an XXL (seen here) and a medium. Typically a tee is worn with a pair of jeans, but not always. I mixed it up by wearing my red and black leopard pants here. I definitely felt like myself in this outfit!

This is me trying to look fierce. You may laugh!! FEAR THE DRAGON!!

Thank you for not telling me what to wear!

So there you have it! Five ways that I’ve been supporting school spirit meanwhile supporting my personal style. I asked my principal if this was ok, and he said yes. Phew!!
