The summer countdown has officially started! We celebrated a day off yesterday for International Labor Day, this past weekend I transferred out wardrobes, and the summer heat has hit Hong Kong. So, yes, the summer countdown is on! Being a teacher definitely has perks–summer being one of them, and to be exact we have 30 more days of school! Yes!! Bring on the red, white, and blue of the United States of America!
Included in the summer countdown is the day we fly out of Hong Kong to the US. This summer we leave on June 17–and awkwardly experience time travel yet again and land on the exact same day. It’s always so weird; trust me. There’s something so American about wearing all red, white, and blue for me. I mean it could be many other countries as the USA isn’t the only country with a red, white, and blue flag, but for me, when I wear these colors, I’m all Americana. Op, I realize I shouldn’t say that as Canada and Mexico as well as all the South American countries can claim Americana as well, but I’ve never been one to be exactly politically correct. I’m too out of touch from anything “American” to begin with. With this school year marking my 21st year living out of the States, it’s hard to pinpoint exactly where I’m from….
I am definitely from the Pacific Northwest though–that’s for sure, and right about now I can hardly wait to get there. When we arrive home on Father’s Day, we’ll be doing one of our favorite things first: hitting a Mariners’ game! Rather than rush to our cabin we’ll stay a week in Seattle–especially since we haven’t spent some time there recently. Then the following weekend we’ll head to the east side, Spokane, and make our way out to our lake cabin at Spirit Lake, Idaho. Vincent will be away most of the summer at a baseball camp, so on July 5th, we’ll go down to Santa Barbara, California and visit him with Kevin’s folks. We always love taking a trip with them. Another highlight will be hosting my family out at the cabin during a weekend in July. The summer seems like it will be especially short this time around as Kevin has to leave back for Hong Kong on July 25th; it just doesn’t seem fair, but it is what it is. We will make the most of every single summer day, rain or shine. It’s the trick of our trade!
Let me talk a bit about this red, white, and blue outfit: the skirt was the starting point as it was a new acquisition this spring. Everything else came together easily–a denim tee I’ve had forever, a denim jacket I made, an Asian velvet bag picked up at the market, and my favorite spring sparkly sneakers that were brought out in the spring wardrobe transfer. Of course, I couldn’t resist a little blue eyeliner and a red lippy!
I’ve made three jean jackets so far: this one first seen last summer out at Spirit Lake, this acid wash one, and my first embellished one. I LOVE making jean jackets, sooooo….if you’d like one, just let me know, and I could work with you to tailor make the embellished jean jacket of your dreams!
What about you?
