I think I pretty much missed the memo this time around for our Fab 40s blogger collaboration. Tales of the Unexpected…hmmm, what exactly does that mean? I spent a good couple of weeks hemming and hawing on the theme Suzy set out for this month. I had no idea what to do. Seriously, I was so stumped and to be honest, I didn’t understand some of the cultural references the ladies were making in the email strand. When it comes to American TV shows, I’m a bit slow to the game. Somebody spoke about Once Upon a Time, but I still don’t really know what that show is…. So, I did what I do best: I researched. When I searched up “Tales of the Unexpected,” I found that this was a British TV show from the late 70s, early 80s akin to the US version of the Twilight Zone. Ok…maybe I’m getting somewhere.
Once I found out that the Tales of the Unexpected was a tv show, I knew I was on to something. When I conducted an image search, I came across a Vogue editorial from 2008. Yes! This was now what I was going to dress as. I have the tulle skirt, a off white ballerina bodysuit, and I have a ladder. But then… I lost my nerve and didn’t think I could actually pull off this look. Back to the drawing board for the Tales of the Unexpected.
At this point, I figured I could conduct a similar Tales of the Unexpected search for images. When I did I came across a very fabulous image of Joan Collins who starred in two different episodes of the show. In one of the scenes she’s in a dynamic black jumpsuit with a gold metal halter. Oh! I was smitten. Unfortunately, my search for finding something similar was not successful. And now, it wouldn’t have been just for this post; Kevin and I attended a ball on Friday night, so I figured if I found anything close resembling Joan Collins’ look in the “Neck” of the Tales of the Unexpected, I’d be killing two birds with one stone so to speak.
Alas, that look never happened, and by now I was getting pretty fed up with myself! Plus, beauty images of my peers were coming in as fairytale princesses. I had definitely missed the memo. But, remaining strong to the theme of the Tales of the Unexpected, I realized I had an entire library filled with actually tales of the unexpected. Having recently genrefied (not yet a Webster dictionary word) our fiction collection, I decided to sit by all those paranormal books–those books with plot lines that could never be explained in our world. Since I’d be sitting amidst all our scary books, I decided to don one of my evil eye tees (and ring for good measure). Hey, I do have ballerina sneakers on, so there’s a bit of princess in the shots! Oh, I missed the mark this month.
While I was way off with the themes, my stylish friends were not! Drum roll please for these modern day princesses…..
Suzy as all things dark like Maleficent, the Black Fairy (from Once Upon a Time) and the Evil Queen
Our Guest Andrea as Cinderella
Jennie as Karen from The Red Shoes
Mary as Belle from Beauty and the Beast
Sheela as the Evil Queen from Snow White from the show Once Upon a Time
And then me, as a superstitious librarian! Hahah! Next time I’ll get it right!!
Do you have a fairytale princess that you relate to–or even evil queen? Actually, in terms of fairytale princesses bad a$$e$ I think the only one I fully relate to is Merida from Brave. I love that gal!
