I’m usually very good about cleaning out my closet. If something is ever added, I try to immediately take something out. This is especially easy with staple items like white tees or black pants. It becomes a little more difficult with funky pieces like printed skirts or graphic tees, but I do try. Living in Hong Kong adds to the impetus for keeping a tight and tidy closet since space and the lack there of is such an issue. But some items, well, I’m definitely guilty of holding on to clothes.
I did some research on this topic of decluttering a closet, and according to all the advice, I should definitely be getting rid of the four featured paisley pieces mentioned in this post. Yet, I will not. I can not. It is impossible for me to get rid of these four pieces of paisley–even though none of them fit me at the moment. Care to know why? I’ll explain.
The Rehearsal Dinner Dress
This dress is exactly one day older than my marriage. I wore it to our rehearsal dinner. My mom and I took a special shopping trip to Seattle just to find it. It was purchased instantly once I tried it on at BCBG. the colors are gorgeous. I felt (and still do) incredible in this dress. It’s slimming and diminishes my bustiness. It is by far the prettiest dress I own. It’s timeless and never seems to be in or out of style. It’s my perfect dress, and I’ll be holding on to it because I feel beautiful in it–not to mention, Kevin loves this dress too!

My Paisley Pants
I love paisley. I can remember being introduced to paisley back in middle school when my mom was working as an interior designer. She’d bring home all sorts of wallpaper books, and I asked her, What is this?! I wanted to know what this mango shaped design was called as I was instantly enamored with the intricacies of paisley. I’ve had various paisley pants–like this velvet flaired pair or this silky pajama pair, but it’s these two pair of pants that I will have to keep forever–even when they don’t fit me. Unfortunately there is absolutely no stretch to either pair, and unfortunately I’ve had the white pair taken in during a thin phase of my life. I suppose they should provide me with incentive to work my way towards fitting into them, and perhaps that’s why they remain in my closet. Regardless that they don’t fit me right now, I just love them! The light pair are for spring and summer; the rustic pair are for the fall and winter. The white pair were purchased the old fashioned way back in 1998 while we were living in El Salvador: through the J.Crew catalog. The orange pair were bought in Venezuela at Zara in 2002 right after Vincent was born and I experienced the weight loss from nursing. What do you know? I got pregnant with Gigi a few months later ending their wear for a bit…. Both pair are adored, and despite the fact that they don’t fit right now, I cannot get rid of them. I just can’t. I’m guilty of holding on to clothes.

The Paisley Tunic from my Mom
As a young girl I can remember wanting to go shopping with my mom so badly. When it did happen, which was rare, those were coveted memories. Even as an adult I can remember each shopping excursion I’ve had with my mom. During her visit to Beijing while we were living there, we did go shopping one day. We were in a Zara, and she had found a couple of items for herself. At the cashier line, she turned to me and asked, “Did you want anything?” I can remember it so clearly, and it was so kind. She had this paisley tunic in her hand, and I said, “I kind of want this tunic too,” to which her response was, “Go get one!” It was such a sweet moment; it was so kind of her. I won’t ever be able to get rid of this gorgeous paisley tunic–the memory of its purchase alone is just too precious.
