Main Street, Spirit Lake

AnnieThe moment we turn left off of Highway 41 on to Main Street, Spirit Lake, we all have a gush of excitement that gives us a butterfly rush! We’re almost there! As we pass through the block of Main Street the building facades are all old town; there are about a dozen businesses (half of those being bars) that we can name. If we blink, we might miss it because before we know it we’re winding down to the lake. The town of  Spirit Lake is real small, but we’ve got a large grocery (Miller’s), a hardware store (Dave winterises our place), pizza and ice cream, plenty of saloons, a church for a few different denominations (St. Joseph’s), a couple of vintage shops (Three Funky Monkeys), a barber, a bakery, and a public library. This year there was a beautiful public park (Fireside Lodge Park) was added for everyone to enjoy the lake. This new addition made me the happiest as now all the community can enjoy the recreation of Spirit Lake.

Sheriff

SpiritLakeOriginally Spirit Lake was called Clear Water, but because of a legend of two doomed and desperate lovers it was changed to Tesemini–or Lake of the Spirits. Fearless Running Water and Shining Eagle were in love and wanted to marry; to make this happen one father declared war on the other father’s tribe. Luckily they did wed, but then tragically they jumped off a cliff bound together plummeting into the lake. The lovers were never found, but the legend states that on a moon lit night their shadows may be seen on the lake. Spirit Lake, our beautifully tragic lake’s namesake, is a pretty special place.
