Zac Posen is a very young yet ultra famous American fashion designer. He has especially become a favorite among all the starlets and fashion models. Having grown up in Soho, NYC with a corporate lawyer mother and an artist father, he was exposed to a trendier more affluent upbringing then most. His interest in fashion started very young: he depicts creating dresses for dolls at a very young age. By age 16 he was already interning for Nicole Miller and received pre-college entry into Parsons The New School of Design. At the age of 18 he went to Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, and by 21 his leather strips with hooks and eyes creation as his graduating final project was showcased at the Victoria and Albert Museum. Mr. Posen started young and fierce; today, he is 33 years old with a very bright future ahead.
Zac Posen’s big break is remembered by a dress that he created for Naomi Campbell. Reportedly he made it for her, and then it began to trade several hands garnering him attention. After graduating, he moved back home and set up shop within his old home. His first show in 2001 was actually in a synagogue. No matter, influentials like Anna Wintour from Vogue were there, front and center. He was thereafter able to establish his studio in Tribeca, NYC. In 2004 Posen received financial backing from Sean Combs. In 2008, with hard economic times abundant in the US and worldwide, Posen created a more affordable line called ZSpoke. He also created a collection for Target, the American mega popular store.
Posen had a very smart strategy starting out and this is big part of the reason for his immediate success: he went after a starlet crowd. With socialite backing, he was sure to become a known name. He knew that “amazing hype from celebrities in clothing drove the business.” As stated by the designer himself regarding his clientele, “It’s very strong women [who wear my line]. Extremely confident and self-assured and powered [women].” This definitely describes those wearing his clothes: Gwyneth Paltrow, Claire Danes, and Natalie Portman to name a few. When asked about his future, Posen is very optimistic. In fact he has been quoted saying, “I’m definitely planning ahead for a brand that spans the universe, a Zac Posen universe.”
