This is the third and final item I recently revitalized from my closet. During some spring cleaning and wardrobe gutting, I came upon three pieces that with a little fixing could be upcycled. I’ve always loved this black floral tunic, but I always hated the length. The length made it so frumpy on me, and I could never figure out how to style it. It was a perfect layering piece in Kuala Lumpur, it made a mediocre coverup, and it helped my bag lady look here. Basically, except for the first time posting this long tunic, I’ve always felt it was a bit, meh, yet I was out to fix this floral tunic.
The easiest thing to do was to get rid of the length. I can still wear it as a tunic (and might be right now as this is being read as I’m in Hoi An for spring break!), or I can tuck it into some jogger pants as shown here and wear it as a blouse. Awww, this top is now so much better! And because I love all the vibrant colors in it, I know I’m going to be wearing it so much more now.
This week of upcycling just three pieces of clothing has been like shopping in my own closet, and I must, MUST(!) do this way more often. Here are a couple of ideas I have up my sleeve: acid washing a dark indigo jean jacket, tie dyeing a graphic tee that has a stain on it, and making a couple of my mini skirts just a tad bit longer (so they’re a bit more acceptable in the work place). Oh, and in the spirit of letting some of my favorite pieces live on, I’ve brought them with me to Hoi An to have replicated. Hoi An in Vietnam is known for being the tailor town, so I will have my favorite black pants, black skirt, and black dress copied. They are three basics that I’ve worn to literal bits, so I’m excited to have them replicated exactly!
I’m bringing a couple of other items to experiment with in Hoi An. Do you remember the crazy paisley tee from Wednesday? Well, I bought another tee in hopes of have a skirt created from the base of the shirt. I want to make a co-ord. I did the same with a Christmas plaid tee and bought two of the same to make a Christmas co-ord. Stay tuned with fingers crossed that my idea pans out. The last thing I brought along for fixing is this oatmeal colored dress: I’m hoping they have dye colors at the dry cleaners–I used to do this sort of thing all the time in India, so I hope Hoi An does the same….
Do you revitalize your closet?
If not, maybe I have inspired you to do so. Take a look at some of the items you’re not wearing. What would make you wear it? If a change helps, go for it. Let our closets live on!!
