I’m a people watcher, and in particular I’m always looking at what people are wearing. Recently, I saw a very chic French teenager in my Stanley neighborhood. I noticed this gal’s sneakers–of course! She had on a pair of Air Force Ones, but this particular pair were very grungy and dirty, but on purpose. I loved how it looked so I set some time to figure out how to makes some distressed sneakers.
After a Google search brought up some images of a couple of pairs of distressed sneakers on Etsy, I knew it was a matter of me figuring it out. I went to our lovely art teacher at school, and she guided me through what I’d need to do. It was so easy–like kindergarten easy!
I’m pleased with how my distressed sneakers turned out. When something gets overly popular–like Air Force Ones, I want to break away and try something new. Revitalizing my wardrobe is easy. With a little imagination and of course paint, I have a new pair of grungy, dirty, distressed sneakers.
Of course the only thing to pair with something so dirty is a little sequins. I like the juxtaposition of glam with urban grunge. Plus adding some “RAD” socks doesn’t hurt either!
DIY: Distressed Sneakers
Making these sneakers is very easy. Grab any white sneakers and grunge them up–no dirt included!
1. All you need is a pair of white sneakers and three colors of acrylic paint: white, black and silver. Oh, and a paint brush, bucket of water, and a sponge or cloth.
2. Take out the shoelaces.
3. Mix a light grey color.
4. Paint the shoes with dabs of the color and then with a damp sponge rub the color all over–like you would with shoe polish.
5. Let that shoe dry and paint the other one.
6. Now take a darker color with more black, and paint again with a brush then rubbing it in with the sponge.
7. Let the distressed sneakers dry. Lace ’em up. And STRUT!
I have a few more shoes in my closet that need revitalizing. Stay tuned….
I am sensing that decorated Teva type sandals are a “thing.”
