There’s this color combo that I can never say no to: yep, it’s black and white and red all over! The moment I saw this jacket in the store window at H&M, I went hunting. I couldn’t find it anywhere. Then, in the changing room, there was one sitting there discarded. I aksed, Can I try this? The moment it was on it was a winner! Eventually I looked at the price–which was a lot for me, but it didn’t matter. It’s my color combo. I had to have it!
Why do I like this color combo of black, white, and red? Like a lot of my fashion fixations, it comes from my mother and how she styled me as a kid. I have so many childhood sartorial memories. Basically I was her guinea pig: she’d dress me in all sorts of things, and I let her. In fact, I loved it! She’d make me try on every single dress or every single swimsuit because you just didn’t know till you tried it on. The outfit I’m about to explain was especially noteworthy, and it was in the color combo of black, white, and red!
There weren’t a whole lot of clothes in my wardrobe–especially since I wore a school uniform, but on those days, like picture day, I went for it with my mom’s guidance. This school picture outfit must have been for 5th grade–I didn’t have my glasses yet, and I had a bad perm on top of my mushroom cut. (Yes, Mom gave me the perm too!) Let’s start at the bottom of this extremely stylish, black, white, and red outfit and work up…. black loafers, white knee-high socks, black bermudas, a white button down, and wait for it! A black tie with little white with red squares. I wore a TIE for my school picture–in 5th grade! Who does that? And what mother dresses their tween like that? My mom, that’s who. And I love it!! To this day I still think it was such a smart little outfit!
Hence, anytime I see something that is black and white and red all over, I snatch it up. It’s like a color combo that takes me back in time.
What’s your go-to color combo?
