Bringing Back My Style Stories: No. 14

I used to enjoy writing a Style Stories post once a week highlighting what I’d worn during the week–like the real outfits that actually get worn. This does one main thing for me: it helps me figure out what’s getting worn. If I wear something and don’t feel good in that item, then I have received the clue that it’s time to move on with that item. Perhaps I could even start to plan out n entire week in advance….a girl can dream right? Take a look at what I wore this week. I’ve linked any items that I highly recommend. Enjoy! And let me know what you think of this past week’s outfits.

Monday

The first day back to work is very casual. Only department heads show up, so it’s not quite the whole faculty yet. Jet leg was still kickin’ in, so I decided to wear a pair of shorts and be comfortable. Luckily I didn’t have any problems making it through the day; my jetleg wasn’t too bad surprisingly.

Embroidered Shorts–My mother-in-law gave me a Target gift card for $25. When I walked into the Pasadena Target (a really good one by the way), I saw these and thought, “Oh those are the shorts I’ll buy from Jane’s gift card.” They’re so cute, and I had planned to bring them to the anniversary festivities in Suncadia, Washington for their 50th anniversary, but I forgot them! Instead I wore them on my own 20th wedding anniversary out at our cabin where we celebrated with my folks, my in-laws, and my godparents. It was a very special night! 20 years!!
Metallic Blue Runners–I’ve had these blue kicks for a while now. I love pulling them out. They’re bright and unstoppable. On a day when I need energy–like a jet legged one, they’re the shoes I grab for.
Hot Lava Lippy–I love this red lipstick. It’s the perfect shade of red WITH a metallic sheen to it. As you continue reading and viewing my week’s looks, you’ll see I’m all about a metallic lip!

Tuesday

This exact outfit has been my serious summer repeat; I have worn it multiple times. I feel very cute and sassy in it. This type of outfit that makes the most of my assets and hides what I need to–ie show my legs, hide the summer holiday gut plus discreetly highlight my décolletage. The luxe Hustle & Hide Co belt bag was a treat from my sister. It’s also a piece I keep wrapping around my waist. It holds my lippy and phone–two essential to carry around during my work day.

Evil Eye Earrings–I get so many compliments on these earrings! And, they were only $6 bucks. I pretty much always have some sort of evil eye on my person whether it’s in the form of earrings, a necklace, ring, or bracelet.
I like to ward off any evil thoughts headed my way.
Polkadot Romper–This romper, well, I can’t say enough about it. It has been my go to all summer long–from lunch dates with girlfriends to the first day back to work, this romper has been my favorite summer purchase.
Bow Satin Slides–I am attempting to not wear tennis shoes every day, and these slides work for me! I bought them in yellow too, and there is also a pale pink. They’re comfy plus a little dressy at the same time. Yay to slides for me!!
White Gold Lippy–I’m super into metallic lips these days and Maybelline has a great line of colors. I have the White Gold, Hot Lava, and Copper Rose. I totally recommend them–plus they’re $7 bucks a pop. Maybelline makes great lippies!

Wednesday

Every summer Kevin will go into the Nordstrom Rack to buy new shoes. While he’s there, I take advantage of him shopping and pick up a new dress for school. I never bother to try it on–I just choose one I know will work for me. This was the case with this gorgeous velvet shift. It’s hard to see, but there are two pockets right in front perfectly situated for carrying my phone while walking the library floor.

Velvet Shift–Score! I always appreciate that Kevin lets me throw something in the cart when we’re at the Nordstrom Rack, and believe me. Velvet is still totally hot so get your velvet on!!
Huarache Sandals–I found these on clearance at Target. Oh, I’m going to miss jaunts to that very lucky store….
Metallic Lipgloss–NYX is one of my new favorite cosmetic lines. It started with my love of their blue mascara, but now it’s expanding into all their lovely lip colors. Their metallic line is awesome! I have both this rose gold color and also the brightest, hottest pink–both so 80s.
Gold Hoops–Big, thick gold hoops are another throwback to the 80s and even 70s. I’m really loving this pair.

Thursday

For Thursday, I was determined to wear my Reebok tennies. This is very silly, but I’m actually pretty proud of owning them a full year ahead of my sister. She bought a pair this summer, and when she showed them to me, I declared, “I already have those!” She didn’t copy me or anything, but I felt pretty cool to own something before her. That never happens! From there I added an embroidered mini and a tied men’s shirt. I often find that a pair of sneakers works with a shorter hemline–at least for me.

Mens Button Down–During one of my jaunts to Forever 21 (when it used to be in Causeway Bay), they had featured this men’s shirt in the women’s department. I snatched it up without even trying it on. I’m happy I did. It makes me feel very Beth Jones Style when I tie it like she does hers.
Embroidered Mini–I picked up this embroidered mini at Zara, but I was able to find it still available on Shein. It’s a goodie.
White Reeboks–And my Reeboks! Classic, comfy, and totally 80s aerobics style! Love them!!

Friday

I was going to wear a lbd on Friday with the leopard sandals and belt, but then I was like, “Wait! Wear shorts while I still can.” New students arrive on Monday with an orientation, and school starts on Tuesday. I’ll have plenty of upcoming days to wear my little black dress–like next week, so I was happy I went with shorts.

The Simple Sandal–Geneva from A Pair and a Spare has created The Simple Sandal. These sandals are sooooo comfortable, and with each wear they just keep getting better. They come in black, cognac, tan, nude, and leopard. Obviously I chose the leopard!
ELF St. Lucia–I love finding dupes. I head to pinterest, put in a favorite, and search for “NARS Laguna dupe.” Presto, St. Lucia came in. So for $3 instead of $30 I’m trying out a new bronzer that looks just like my favorite. So far I’m pleased with this cosmetic duplicate.
Voile Satine–I’ve been super into oils lately: HM’s body oil, coconut oil, and my old favorite Bio Oil. (I say old favorite because my niece pointed out an app called Think Dirty. You put in the product and it gives you the rating of the product. I do not recommend trying it. I found out that my beloved Bio Oil is really, really bad for me. Hmmmm, I may finish my full bottle anyway since I love the smell and feel so much.) My sweet sister Mary gave me this bottle of Voile Satin by Diptyque. It smells so lovely and reminds me of India in a beautiful way.
Old Navy Shorts–These are the shorts I turn to when I’m a bit on the heavier side–which usually happens right after a fun filled summer at the cabin. Uh oh. I like the style and length because they flatter my legs yet flatter my heavier gut. I really recommend this style of shorts.

What do you think of this new format for my Style Stories?

It was fun to make, and I can see it being useful if I were to actually plan out my outfits a full week ahead?

    1. Thanks Sam! I did too. It was so fun to make. Unfortunately….the next time I went around to making these flatlays, I ended up in the hospital! EEEE GATS!!

I’ll have to figure out another way of making them aside from bending down and working on the floor. Because I too, really liked making this post. I’ll figure it out. I’m not letting this ailing body make me quit!!

      Thanks for the feedback Sam.

      Annie

  1. Hey Annie! I read this post about a week ago as I was preparing for my week in Northern Mn. and visits with life-long friends. Then I didn’t get back go it…
I liked this a lot! I’m guessing that it’s more work than a regular post (?)
I LOVE the embroidered skirt. I looked long and hard at it on the Shein website wondering how I could make it longer… What do you think??? Doable???
I also love the blue metallic sneakers. I see how they could brighten a day! I always felt such an emotional mix on that first day back to school workshop. I don’t reengage quickly and i remember my psyche fighting the demands that were beginning again. I’ll bet your library is a wonderfully creative looking space that draws students like little magnets.
Kids used to ask me if i ever wore the same outfit twice. I don’t think I did! Combining and recombining is too much fun!!

    1. That’s awesome! That last statment!! I try to remix and combine all the time too. And yes, it takes me a bit to reengage…Spirit Lake, Idaho quietness to Hong Kong International School intensity!

These blue sneakers–they make me happy on many a gloomy day. They add a little pep to my step–even when it isn’t really there. The color is just magical. You can bet if these are on my feet, I’m wearing the same color mascara on my lashes!!

I loved making this post. It’s fun to lay everything out and pretend like I work for InStyle Magazine! I like including little details like my lipstick and special earrings. I’m glad both you and Sam liked it.

Unfortunately, last week, when I went to make another Style Story of last weeks dresses and tennis shoes, I ended up throwing my back out on Wednesday night. I didn’t make it to school on Thursday, and by Friday morning, Kevin ended up bringing me to the hospital. I was in such hysterical pain. Ends up my L4 and L5 discs have annular tears. Lucky me I do not need surgery, but those tears, well they were SCREAMING! I had a simple procedure on Saturday where I was sedated and received an epidural and other shots–I’ve got 8 nice bruise spots on my back!

I was discharged on Sunday, and I’ve been laying low. He told me to stay home this week and rest. I’m in my Command Central aka bed as I reply.

So, there’s a little update!! Not sure if I’ll get to another post like this, but I’d really like to try. I don’t plan on letting my ailing body stop me!!

      A x
