An Idaho 4th

I’m at my happy place: Spirit Lake, Idaho! Since we arrived it as been chilly, chilly, chilly–just as I predicted. Luckily, I have a wardrobe full of all my Idaho essentials like these slouchy Levi’s, my very, very old flannel shirt, and the perfectly worn in pair of flip flops. My hair has even started to get a bit longer whereas I can almost pull it back–hmmm, that in-between stage.

This flannel has quite the story, and of course I’ll share it. After I graduated from college I felt compelled to give back in some way. The volunteer position that I was able to take was on the Jicarilla Apache Indian Reservation down in Dulce, New Mexico. I became the third grade teacher for St. Francis Missionary school. It was soooo tough! I had no idea what I was doing and at the time no inclination to become a teacher–AT ALL! My principal, Robert Schmidt, who was the kindest boss, let me borrow this shirt, and it definitely came in handy since the New Mexican winters were absolutely freezing! In the end, he let me keep this super soft, perfectly worn in flannel shirt. It’s found the perfect home out at Spirit Lake. I’ve been wearing it nonstop during the start of a very brisk summer.

The other thing that has been keeping me cozy is reading by the fire. We have already had three weeks of summer, and in that time, I’ve already read three books! I love when I’m able to dedicate time to reading. I promise to give a review of all my summer reads at the end of the summer. Currently I’m on one of Gillian Flynn‘s creepy books: Sharp Objects. It’s the kind of book that’s drawing me in; I know this when I feel like I’d rather be reading!

*I’m smiling at my mom here who’s making fun of my poses! Ironically, I look a lot like her in this pic!

For an Idaho 4th, I’ll be celebrating on Main Street with the local parade and the town park picnic. It’s always such fun, and my brother and his wife with two little kids will be out for the day. Those two littles are going to love the funny trucks and cars the go by plus all the candy that gets thrown about. My favorite part is heading to the vintage stall after the parade and purchasing a little vintage goodie or two.

These pictures were taken in my current favorite reading spot: it’s the bench just off the screened in porch. If the sun is out, it will be shining here, so it’s the perfect place to read and warm up.

What’s on your summer reading list?

What will you be doing for the 4th?
