It’s been so fun wearing Western this month. If anything I hope I’ve offered some styling tips how to incorporate this fall trend without over doing it–which I can easily do! Simple things like adding cowboy boots, a double belt, or fringe and studs are simpl additions to any outfit. This final demonstration of wearing Western may just be my favorite: add turquoise.
I love turquoise. Like a lot. So whenever I find a piece I like, I usually snatch it up. It doesn’t phase me that I already have a plethora of options; I’m just that attracted to this stone. My love of the exotic blue stone probably comes from the time I lived on the Jicarilla Apache Reservation in Dulce, New Mexico. I can remember going to different powwows and just gravitating to the turquoise vendors’ stalls. The strand turquoise around my neck is evidence of a Hopi Indian powwow I attended during that year of living in Northern New Mexico. Now, I add turquoise any time I see it creating a very nice collection for me to choose from when I get dressed.
For example, I just speak to the three pieces being worn here: the ring on my right index finger is from India and the one on my left index is from Santa Barbara. The belt has a pretty desperate story: I really loved this belt, but it did not fit, at all! However, this did not deter me. I bought it anyway, and then I worked with a tailor to make it bigger. All we needed to do was add some space on the buckle side since that would be covered up by the strap side. See!? Determination. That and fashion fixations. I’m very persistent with my obsessions. And at the Spirit Lake 4th of July Picnic Parade, I just had to have this belt–even though I couldn’t get it around my waist!!
Speaking of adjusting things… again there’s another sample of wanting something a little bigger. I love, love, love this cowrie/turquoise necklace, and I did have to have it! It’s from Raleigh Beach in Thailand. Unfortunately, it was made for an individual with a much, much smaller neck. It wasn’t just a choker; it was choking me. Luckily the lovely artisan made me a new one to fit my (larger) neck. I was so pleased with him–and yes, I did give him a tip! The earrings were also a splurge. I never really pay much for my jewelry–I’m like a $20 bucks is an awful lot kinda gal. But, these earrings! I could only imagine them with my Hopi necklace from New Mexico. So, I did it: I paid $100 USD for these hoops. Thank goodness I did because the worst thing is when I fixate on something I didn’t get on a trip. This past summer during our trip to Santa Barbara I had five days to keep going back to the store. I’m glad in the end they are MINE!
Ok, there’s one last item that I need to write about from this look: my black, flat, cowboy boots. Guess what?! These boots were actually purchased in Hong Kong WAY back! During one of our trips home from India, we had a layover in Hong Kong, and I can remember going to the Zara at IFC. In fact, we took a family picture there at the big tree they had on display. Well, I bought these boots for the trip home since we were going to Washington State–I knew I need some boots! Can you believe that? This means these boots are at least, if not older than 10 years! These boots are made for walking!
There you have it–wearing Western. Which way would you add a bit of a Western flare to a look? Would you add the cowboy boots, the double belt, some fringe and studs, turquoise or all of the above?
Please let me know in the comments….
How do you wear Western?
Would you like some more inspiration for the Western style trend? Then I recommend you head on over to Debbie of Fashion Fairy Dust. She is the boho Western queen. Everything she wears is touched with a little bit of this style. For example, I searched up cowboy boots on Fashion Fairy Dust and got four pages of posts. And check out these cowboy boots! Dang!!
PS Can you guess which color of cowboy boots I recently ordered?
