This was my travel outfit to and from Bali. The pants were perfect and very Balinese–even though they’re from Zara. I carried my straw beach bag as a carry on which is actually perfect for throwing all that’s needed in transit below my seat. The flip flops, well they’re a staple in Southeast Asia. I can’t remember which country I picked these ones up, but I know it was in a local beach market and they cost me about $2. No offense to Havaianas, but I could care less about my flip flop brand; in fact I find the ones found in local markets to be a bit cushier.
Speaking of flip flops… the fact they were “trending” during the most recent fashion weeks completely cracks me up. I mean, I’m guessing but it seems at least 75% of Southeast Asia wears a pair of flip flops on a daily basis. How can this be an actual trend? Don’t mind me though: I’m all about comfort, wearing sneakers on the daily. But flip flops? Yes, I wear them daily too–they are my neighborhood grocery store shoe, but that’s about it. Oh, they are also my beach shoe. So that’s makes two occasions for flip flops; I’ll be wearing them to the beach and through my neighborhood, but NEVER ever for style! Although, one should never say, “never,” right?!
It is quite possible that our love for Bali stems from the fact that it is a Hindu island. Just about 85% of Bali practices Hinduism, so we are guaranteed a lovely experience we are all too familiar with from our time of living in India. I’ve spoken about Lord Ganesha many times on Kremb de la Kremb before. He is one of our family gods. When I see him, my heart does feel a little flutter–obviously not of the romantic kind but more from the gratitude vein. Ganesh is a very protective guardian, one that I am always happy to have in my life.
I feel really lucky to live in Asia. It’s a very dynamic place–from Hong Kong to Bali, there’s a vibrancy to be found in all the cultures of this region. I can’t wait to go back to Bali in December to celebrate Christmas and the New Year. And yes, I’ll be wearing flip flops and I’ll be eager to see Lord Ganesha.
